The much loved but discontinued GoPro HERO5 Session was a brilliant little cycling action camera at the time of release (six years ago!). A lot of GoPro fans have been hoping for a follow-up small form factor camera... and the HERO 11 Mini is their answer. Although the image quality and video stabilisation is lightyears ahead of the HERO5 Session, the Mini isn't all that 'mini' and has some teething issues. Is the GoPro Hero 5 still worth it in 2022? It's been 6 years since this camera was released, in 2016, and I remember this camera being an absolute beast at the time. But a lot has changed since the Hero 5 and Hero 5 Session's launch date, and the question remains; is it still good enough today? Well, yes it is. I was absolutely blown away by the image coming out of the Hero 5. Underwater particularly, the colours are amazing, the skin tones look real, the water has an attractive deep blue, and the corals and marine life are true to colour. I honestly expected far less from this old action camera, but it's really held it's own, and in many ways it's much better than I remember it being! Even in low light, the image is stable and it's not falling apart. There are a few imperfections and noise on the sunrise image, where we attached the Hero 5 Session to a DJI drone, but even still it's a semi useable image (particularly given how dark and gloomy that day was in reality). I did film all shots in GoPro's Log mode, ProTune, and then edit them afterwards, but even still the cameras ability to record colour information like this is impressive. The 1080p 60fps slow motion footage also looks really really clean which is very impressive. Now you may be asking, is the Hero 5 Session different from the Hero 5? And yes it is, but the image and video specs offered are very similar. The differences are in; - battery life, and the presence of a removable battery; - size and design; - having an LCD screen on the Hero 5 and not on the Session; and - being able to access settings easily. The only practical difference is access to higher frame rates on the Hero 5, which honestly I never go higher than 50 or 60p anyways, and having access to a few more lens options like superview, which similarly I don't use and advise against. So while there are a few differences, the image you're looking at is no different to the image I'd have used even with the few extra settings. Having a screen would have been great while filming though, and additionally being able to change settings without having to create a QR code and scanning it in camera (as the GoPro App no longer supports the Hero 5 Session), would have been very nice from an ease of use standpoint. As with all cameras, the best results and image come from filming in a flat profile, like log. On GoPro this is called ProTune, and these are my best settings for the GoPro Hero 5. Mind you, these are the exact same settings I use on all of my GoPro's from the 3 up to the 10. - Medium Sharpness - -0.3 Exposure Comp - ISO limit 400 - Flat colour mode - Camera Raw White Balance - Protune Mode - 1080p 60fps Additionally you may find this video helpful, as the same colour correction is done for all GoPro ProTune images, and the same settings are used (mostly aside from a few new ones like hypersmooth): The GoPro Hero 10 Best Settings for Underwater Filming and Colour Correction Guide in Premiere Pro: 🤍 Further, I would not advise attaching a GoPro to the bottom of your drone. While it worked this time, I have heard many stories of it interfering with GPS and other sensors. We've been struggling to decide whether to keep the GoPro Hero5 Session or the Hero7 Black as our main FPV flight camera. Having done back to back flights, we felt that the quad flew better with the Hero5 Session but that the Hero7 Black had substantially better video quality. To put this to rest once and for all, we created a custom mount to run both cameras at the same time and see how their video quality compare under the same exact conditions. The GoPro Hero 5 Session may look the same as its predecessor, but it now boasts 4k image quality, voice control, video stabilisation and a USB-C connection, as well as updated and increased frame rates and resolutions. We’ve managed to ride with it in some fairly varied terrain and climatic conditions, and reckon we’ve got a good handle on how it performs.

There are lots of dishonest "sponsored" DJI Action 2 reviews on YouTube. It is a camera with some worrying flaws and it's clear from the design it isn't a replacement for the original DJI Action or the modern GoPros. Rather, it's a re-imagining of the GoPro Hero 5 Session, and the camera it's trying to compete with is the Insta360 Go 2. So this video is an honest and comprehensive comparison of all three devices with lots of side-by-side footage and a series of tests: Video quality, Battery life, Stabilization, Overheating problems, Horizon levelling, Audio from internal mics, menus, apps, modular design and Vlogging. After 3 months with the GoPro Hero5 Session, here are the best settings for stable and high-quality video in most scenarios (text of settings below too). UPDATE: I've stopped filming in 2.7K altogether. I don't see the point as barely anyone has 2.7K/4K monitors. I've dropped down to 1080P and increased the frame rate to 60FPS for very fluid videos - it looks great. The rest of the settings remain the same. The main benefit of 2.7K for me is to cropped into the picture when editing a 1080P video. You have that option to zoom into the image and create a new frame - but I barely do this anyway. Filming in 2.7K will also future proof your videos so when everyone does have 4K monitors your videos will look great, it's up to you if you care about that or not. Also, if shooting at 60FPS turn auto low light on - it'll reduce the frame rate to 30 to let more light in and give you a brighter image if filming in dark places. Only a few weeks after I purchased the GoPro Hero4 Session they announced the update, the Hero5 Session. I didn't look too much into the specifications at the time due to having just spent the money... but after finding out about the built-in stabilisation from Ray Maker (after discussing my frustrations with software stabilisation on a ride), I dived back into my pocket and picked up a Hero5. To my surprise it wasn't just the stabilisation that was different!
