PLC Programming Tutorial for Beginners_ Part-2 🤍 In this lesson we will learn how to write a PLC program using an "S7 300” PLC and “STEP 7” software. We have two pumps which are being used to transfer two separate liquids into this tank.Inside the tank there are two level switches installed in the lower and upper parts of the tank respectively. There is also an electrically powered mixer inside the tank which starts working for a defined period of time, mixing the two liquids together after the tank has filled. We also have a discharge valve in the bottom of the tank which controls the draining of the liquid from the tank. When the level of the liquid drops to the level of the switch's position the contact closes, sending a 24 volt DC signal to the PLC input. We want to write the program so that when the level of the liquid reaches this minimum, the pumps will be activated and begin filling the tank with the liquids. The pumps continue filling the tank until the level reaches its maximum at the higher level switch. When this happens the open contacts in the switch will be closed and another 24-volt signal will be sent to the PLC input telling us that the tank is full. When this signal has been sent, first the pumps should shut down so that no more liquid enters the tank, and then this mixer should be turned on. We want the mixer to operate for seven seconds, mixing the liquids that have been pumped into the tank. After seven seconds the mixer should automatically shut down and this discharge valve should open. With the valve open the liquid will be discharged from the tank and transferred to another location within the factory to be processed. When the level of the liquid in the tank drops to the minimum set level of the lower switch, the switch contacts will close again thus starting a repeat of the cycle! Steps towards learning Automation - 04 In this episode, we will understand what is PLC ladder programming PLC is a logic controller which has inputs and outputs to control a particular process. The relation between these inputs and outputs is established via a control logic. This control logic can be written using different programming languages. One of the most common and easier to understand language is the ladder programming. Check the video to know why the language is called ladder programming. This video further discusses what are NO (Normally Open) and NC (Normally Closed) contacts and how they can be used in control logic to achieve a specific task. These programming blocks are explained using animations and example. The logic for AND gate is developed using these contacts. Specifically what they are and when do we use them when programming PLCs. Most PLC manufacturers around the world still support ladder logic programming. However, some have been moving towards function block programming. Let’s take a look at some of the similarities and differences. Ladder logic is pretty well “the universal programming language” of PLCs. As I mentioned earlier it has been around for decades and is pretty well understood by most technicians and engineers alike. It is named Ladder Logic because it quite literally looks like a ladder. The vertical lines are referred to as the power rails. The horizontal lines that our programming bits are located on are rungs, just like on a ladder. It is read from top to bottom and left to right. Function block diagrams can essentially convert several lines of ladder logic into boxes. In the middle of the function block will be a symbol or text, labeling the function block. This will describe the actual function of the block. There can be one or several inputs and an output for each function block. Those function blocks can be inputs to other function blocks as well. Just like ladder logic, function block diagrams should be read left to right, top to bottom. In a sense, this format can make it easier for a technician troubleshooting a machine see what is happening to the machine. Let’s look at an “AND” function block first. If you are unfamiliar with “AND” Logic, it is actually pretty simple. Basically, you need at least two inputs energized to turn on or energize its output. I like to think of it as you need this input, and, that input to turn on the output. In ladder logic, it would look like a series circuit like this. In a function block diagram, the entire rung is replaced by this box or block. Many industrial machine use “AND” logic. A large metal Press Brake uses “AND” logic for its controls. The operator must push two buttons at the same time. This energizes the output of the “AND” logic. This allows the cylinders to be activated and bend the metal. Another common function used is the “OR” logic function block. This is like the opposite of “AND” logic. With an “OR” function block, you would energize this input, or, that input to energize the output. In ladder logic, it would look like a parallel circuit like this. Machines may use “OR” logic when there are more than one set of controls to operate the machine. Conveyor belts can utilize this programming. They will commonly have the “Start” and “Stop” buttons located near the conveyor. Rather than being visual or graphics-based like ladder logic or Function Block Diagram, Structured Text is just that, text! Like all programming languages, Structured Text has advantages and disadvantages, and there are also reasons you as a programmer might choose to use Structured Text in your next PLC programming project. Since Structured Text is similar to traditional High-Level programming languages, it can be fairly easy for many people who may not have a background in PLC programming but have experience in traditional coding to learn and develop PLC projects. In most cases, you can also develop your Structured Text PLC programming project without using the PLC programming software. Since it is text-based, you can write your project in a simple text file and copy and paste it into your PLC project when you are ready. This also makes editing your project easier when you are debugging. While this feature of Structured Text is useful, remember that without your programming software like TIA Portal or RSLogix, you cannot compile and debug your program. Most PLC manufacturers support different programming languages in their PLC’s and this is because there are many different reasons that a programmer will choose a particular programming language. These reasons can be as simple as a client request for a specific programming language all the way to the size of the programming project. Since Structured Text is by definition, text-based, it means that it does not have the memory-intensive graphical interface which can allow for a smaller processor memory and therefore a reduced cost. This makes Structured Text an ideal candidate for larger PLC programs where controller memory is at a premium. Some other times you might want to use Structured Text are when you are deploying the same PLC program over and over, such as in a packaged machine that is sent to a customer for a turn-key start-up. In these cases, your PLC program file can be stored offline in a text file or word document and can be easily sent as an email attachment for someone to download into the PLC and deploy. The syntax of Structured Text follows some basic rules: - First, all statements in Structured Text will end with a semicolon. - A routine will close out with an End_If statement. - Spaces and tabs are not required, but a good programmer will still use them for readability. - Structured Text is not case sensitive, but if you are assigning a variable, known as a tag or a symbol such as “control valve 1”, then using camelCase ControlValve1 is a good practice to get into. Another very common and useful syntax of Structured Text is the use of a comment. As a beginning programmer, the use of comments is essential to creating code that can be read later on. To add a comment in Structured Text you will start with a left parenthesis followed by an asterisk. To close your comment, you will then add another asterisk followed by a right parenthesis. Structured Text also uses operators to manipulate data. Some examples of operators are the logical operators such as AND, OR, and NOT.
