These devices are commonly marketed as being beneficial to allergy sufferers and asthmatics, and at reducing or eliminating second-hand tobacco smoke. The commercially graded air purifiers are manufactured as either small stand-alone units or larger units that can be affixed to an air handler unit (AHU) or to an HVAC unit found in the medical, industrial, and commercial industries. Air purifiers may also be used in industry to remove impurities from air before processing. Pressure swing adsorbers or other adsorption techniques are typically used for this. In 1830, a patent was awarded to Charles Anthony Deane for a device comprising a copper helmet with an attached flexible collar and garment. A long leather hose attached to the rear of the helmet was to be used to supply air, the original concept being that it would be pumped using a double bellows. A short pipe allowed breathed air to escape. The garment was to be constructed from leather or airtight cloth, secured by straps.[1] In the 1860s, John Stenhouse filed two patents applying the absorbent properties of wood charcoal to air purification (patents 19 July 1860 and 21 May 1867), thereby creating the first practical respirator.[2] In 1871, the physicist John Tyndall wrote about his invention, a fireman's respirator, as a result of a combination of protective features of the Stenhouse's respirator and other breathing devices.[3] This invention was later described in 1875.[4] In the 1950s, HEPA filters were commercialized as highly efficient air filters, after being put to use in the 1940s in the United States' Manhattan Project to control airborne radioactive contaminants.[5][6] The first residential HEPA filter was reportedly sold in 1963 by brothers Manfred and Klaus Hammes in Germany,[7] who created the Incen Air Corporation which was the precursor to the IQAir corporation.[citation needed] Use and benefits Dust, pollen, pet dander, mold spores,[8] and dust mite feces can act as allergens, triggering allergies in sensitive people. Smoke particles and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can pose a risk to health. Joseph Allen, director of the Healthy Buildings program at Harvard's School of Public Health, recommends that school classrooms use an air purifier with a HEPA filter as a way to reduce transmission of COVID-19 virus, saying "Portables with a high-efficiency HEPA filter and sized for the appropriate room can capture 99.97 percent of airborne particles."[10] One fluid dynamic modelling study from January 2021 suggests that operating air purifiers or air ventilation systems in confined spaces, such as an elevator, during their occupancy by multiple people leads to air circulation effects that could, theoretically, enhance viral transmission.[11] However, real-life testing of portable HEPA/UV air filters in COVID-19 wards in hospital demonstrated complete elimination of air-borne SARS-CoV-2.[12] Interestingly this report also showed a significant reduction in other bacteria, fungal and viral bioaerosol, suggesting that portable filters such as this may be able to prevent not only nosocomial spread of COVID-19 but also other hospital-acquired infections. Purifying techniques An air purifier placed under a table There are two types of air purifying technologies, active and passive. Active air purifiers release negatively charged ions into the air, causing pollutants to stick to surfaces, while passive air purification units use air filters to remove pollutants. Passive purifiers are more efficient since all the dust and particulate matter is permanently removed from the air and collected in the filters.[13] Several different processes of varying effectiveness can be used to purify air. As of 2005, the most common methods were high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters and ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI).[14] Filtration Air filter purification traps airborne particles by size exclusion. Air is forced through a filter and particles are physically captured by the filter. Various filters exist notably including:

In this video, Ross Trethewey explains how air filtration systems work and how to build a localized DIY air filter. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: 🤍 Home technology expert, Ross Trethewey teaches how air filtration systems work and how to build a localized DIY air filter. Ross explains the MERV air filtration system. MERV stands for Minimal Efficiency Reporting Value, a value that measures how effectively a filter stops particulates of varying sizes from passing through and into the air system. The higher the rating, the more effective the filter is at capturing smaller particles. Ratings 1-16 are HVAC use; in general, houses usually have around a MERV 5-12 system. MERV 17-20 are HEPA filters, those are used in hospitals and laboratories. Ross clarifies that homeowners cannot just install a MERV 16 or HEPA filter into their homes. In many circumstances the HVAC systems homeowners have in place simply aren’t strong enough to handle higher rated filters, as the more filtration the air has to go through, the more resistance it has to overcome. Even if you were to get a thicker filter that increases surface area, meaning less resistance, you’ll have to check if your HVAC system has enough space to install a thicker filter. Check with an HVAC technician to check what rating your system can handle. If you are unable to acquire a higher rated filter, Ross demonstrates how to build your own DIY air filter. By taking four MERV-13 air filters and duct taping them on all four sides of a box fan, you’ll have a localized air filter for any room you want. For about $150, you can have a little piece of mind during wildfires and other disasters that impact our air quality. Time: 20 minutes Cost: $150 Skill Level: Beginner Shopping List: 20-inch box fan [🤍 Four 20x20x2 MERV-13 air filters [🤍 Duct tape [🤍 Cardboard cutout [🤍 Steps: 1. Cut out a piece of cardboard that’s the same size as the box fan to use for the back. 2. Place the cardboard on a table and take the four air filters and stack them on the edges of the cutout, with the airflow arrow pointing in (air intake side). 3. Take duct tape and secure each filter to the fan. 4. Duct tape the cardboard backing. 5. Place the fan on the other side and secure it with duct tape. 6. Remember that you’ll have to replace the filters every once in a while. For Ross’ DIY system, the filters should be replaced about every six months. Where to find it? Ross built the air filter using four, 20x20x2, MERV-13 air filters, which Ross got from Filterbuy (🤍 ). He duct taped the filters to a cardboard box and a 20-in 3-Speed Box Fan, which is manufactured by Lasko (🤍 ), though any 20” fan would work for this application. Today we Design, Build, Test, and Review this high power shop air cleaner! This video was a year in the making. It's easy to build an air filtration system, but the most important part is how it works. It takes time to fully test something. The end of the video includes a detailed breakdown of how much performance you can expect out of this unit. A secondary use of this type of filter is to clean the air in public spaces to reduce airborne pathogens. Filters with a MERV 16 or higher rating are capable of filtering 95% of particles between .3 and 1 micron in size. At 2500CFM a this filter unit can process all the air in a small restaurant/shop (1000sq.ft./ 90sq.m) in as little as 3 minutes. I retested this filter with 2 different fans and got some updated numbers. My friend Neil Comparetto came up with a very effective, very inexpensive way to clean air for less than $100. It's not fancy, but it works as well or better than many high-end air purifiers and filtration products 'they' are trying to sell you. The important thing is that it's a fan and a filter, which is all you should ask for in an air purifying device- nothing that 'destroys', 'eliminates', or 'sanitizes' using 'electronics', 'UV', or 'plasma'.
