The rise of a global company - From the microscope to the moon landing | DW Documentary

175 years ago, the young mechanic Carl Zeiss opened a small workshop for precision mechanics and optics. These humble beginnings in the German city of Jena were the foundation of the Zeiss technology company, which today operates worldwide. The production of glass with game-changing optical properties was one of the developments that helped Carl Zeiss create a company that valued scientific research highly, while never forgetting science’s social impact. Zeiss microscopes have been used by more than 30 Nobel Prize winners. To this day, these instruments offer unrivaled image resolution, with lenses that can display structures one thousand times smaller than a human hair. Light microscopes allow living cells to be examined with extreme gentleness and speed, as well. The Zeiss company was involved in the moon landing in 1969, and thus helped redefine the limits of what humans are capable of. Images of the historic event were captured using Zeiss camera lenses developed specially for space. These lenses were key to the later development of photolithography, which plays a decisive role in the production of microchips. Developments in extreme ultraviolet lithography led to Zeiss winning the German Future Prize together with the Fraunhofer Institute and the Trumpf company. #documentary #dwdocumentary DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. Carl Zeiss, Explained: Germany’s Semiconductor Optics Master

Germany-based Carl Zeiss AG is a fascinating company. Fascinating, even if you do not take into account that they make lenses and optics for some of the coolest systems in the world. When you are etching patterns as wide as a small virus, you have graduated beyond simple lens. Now we refer to them as "optics systems". These massive multi-component systems are at the very heart of the multi-million dollar photolithography machines that ASML makes. Without them, ASML has no machine to deliver to TSMC, Samsung or Intel. In this video, we are going to continue with our deep dive into the semiconductor industry’s critical suppliers with a look at one of ASML’s closest partners. The makers of the optics systems that let high-energy UV light etch wafers. And a company with an utterly fascinating history. Carl Zeiss. Error: The video shows that Zeiss died in 1866. He died in 1888. Links: - The Asianometry Newsletter: 🤍 - Patreon: 🤍

How Carl Zeiss Crafts Optics for a $150 Million EUV Machine

Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography is the next step on the semiconductor fabrication roadmap. It is a disruptive technology using a new ultraviolet wavelength. Dutch company ASML is currently the only company shipping these million dollar machines. But ASML in turn relies on Carl Zeiss in Germany for the all-important optics system. The two are intimate strategic partners. The key issue that ASML and Carl Zeiss engineers had to overcome is that high-energy UV light gets absorbed by virtually all materials, which means that lenses are not feasible. The lens material will literally just eat up those rays. Thus, Zeiss crafted an optics system entirely out of multi-layer mirrors. It is super cool. In my last video I gave a brief overview of Carl Zeiss the company and a few of their products. In this follow up, we are going to go deeper and look at how Zeiss made a EUV optics system. Errata: (You can tell I was getting tired.) 5:30 - I suck at math. 17,622 meters high, not 780 meters 11:00 - The mirror is coated last. Multi-layer deposition goes first 11:30 - 0.5mm Links: - The Asianometry Newsletter: 🤍 - Patreon: 🤍

ZEISS: A company that sees beyond

Climate change and sustainability are increasingly becoming the watchwords for companies across sectors, especially in manufacture of consumer products. The public are, more and more, becoming very aware of the need for resource conservation and for companies to engage in optimisation of their processes to offset negative environmental impact. This is particularly important in industries responsible for providing the tools or equipment for others – such as technologies for the manufacturing sector – who play a crucial role for reducing the environmental footprint of our digital work and life. ZEISS is a longstanding and sustainable presence in its industry - the company’s two founders, Carl Zeiss and Ernst Abbe, made sustainability part of the corporate identity. #ZEISS #Sustainability #Technology _ TBD Media is an international purpose driven media group that helps companies, organisations and governments tell their brand stories in a direct and human way. How The Soviets Split Carl Zeiss

Note: Yeah I know something’s up with the audio but it sounded fine to me at the time. Later videos will have this fixed. For nearly half a century, there were two Carl Zeisses. One based in the Federal Republic of Germany, or West Germany. The other in the German Democratic Republic, or East Germany. The Carl Zeiss of today is the Western German variant. Their work in lithography and EUV sits on the cutting edge of what is possible in nanoscale technology. But the Carl Zeiss of East Germany was fascinating too. It grew to be a massive industrial conglomerate, doing cutting edge research into optics, military tech, and semiconductors. In this video, I want to step away from Asia once more and look at a fascinating history. One of Germany's most iconic companies, split in two between East and West. 200 Years Carl Zeiss (1816 – 1888) – A Visionary Entrepreneur

Who is Carl Zeiss? It all began with an idea: the idea of precision mechanic Carl Zeiss to merge quality, precision and science. It started at a time of upheaval, on the eve of the mechanization and scientific conquest of our world. Scientific research was still in its infancy. The machine age had only just begun. Carl Zeiss recognized the great potential ahead and, after finishing his training, chose to settle at a site where science was flourishing: the city of Jena with its prestigious university. From craftsman to entrepreneur He built microscopes in Jena from 1846 onwards. Together with Ernst Abbe, he succeeded in placing the construction of microscopes on a scientific foundation. This was the basis of today's global player ZEISS, where his entrepreneurial spirit and scientific drive is still vividly present today. Visit 🤍 to learn more

ASML and Carl Zeiss - Two Companies, one business

The long-standing strategic relationship between Carl Zeiss and ASML has had a pivotal role in developing semiconductor lithography and consumer electronics. Using Zeiss precision optics, ASML systems project the worlds sharpest images of tiny circuit patterns, making the smallest and most powerful chips in high volumes. Having two world class companies share the huge investments necessary for chip innovation is a winning recipe for future mutual success. Innovating faster than the competition, these two companies will be the driving force behind electronics by making chips smarter, cheaper and greener for years to come.

f0.7 – Ultrafast Lenses – Legends, budget options, modding, and testing – Epic Episode #13

In this crazy experiment we push the limits of lens speed by modding a camera to fit a massive Zeiss Biotar f0.73 lens. Along the way, we are going to take you to the dark side of the moon the realm of the legendary Zeiss Planar f0.7 lens and explain how it helped Staley Kubrick to shot Barry Lyndon in candlelight. 125 years Carl Zeiss Foundation: Journey with Light - Part 2/2

After World War II, work started on the building of an optics factory in Oberkochen and a glass works in Mainz. Heidenheim was chosen to be the headquarters of the Foundation. Although East-West collaborations were rendered impossible by the cold war, each of the companies in both states became technology leaders in the optics and specialized glass industries. A dispute over rights to the brand name and trademark erupted during the 1950s which was to last for decades. A settlement was finally reached in the course of the 1970s and '80s. Following German reunification, the companies in the former East and West agreed to reunite the Carl Zeiss Foundations. In 2004, the Foundation passed a constitutional reform in which the structure of the Foundation and both companies was aligned to the context of the global economy. However, Ernst Abbe's spirit and principles were preserved. Since 2006, the Foundation has been sponsoring doctoral and postdoctoral students and junior professors at universities in the regions where its member companies are based. Its sponsorship also encompasses foundation professorships. For more information on the Carl Zeiss Foundation, please go to: 🤍

125 years Carl Zeiss Foundation: Journey with Light - Part 1/2

Jena-based physicist Ernst Abbe was way ahead of time, as evidenced by his foundation and company constitution. At the end of the 19th century, the 8-hour working day and company pension were foreign concepts to many entrepreneurs. The Carl Zeiss Foundation was established on 19 May 1889 in honor of the deceased Carl Zeiss. Abbe had founded a glass works together with Zeiss and Otto Schott in 1884. To Abbe, scientific progress, qualified employees and responsible corporate governance were the foundations of economic success. He gradually developed his corporate philosophy on this basis. In order to safeguard the existence of both companies and to protect them from personal ownership interests, Ernst Abbe, Zeiss heir Roderich Zeiss and – some years later – Otto Schott transferred all their shares in the business to the Foundation. Thus, sole ownership of both companies was assigned to the Foundation. For more information on the Carl Zeiss Foundation, please go to: 🤍

Carl Zeiss in Jena (1996)

It has ZERO distortion, unlike many wide angle lenses, so it's great for architecture shots or anything that needs distortion-free wide angle images - and it's perfect for film making too! This copy was a little sorry for itself when I bought it - it had some fungus behind the front element that needed cleaning, and the aperture mechanism was stuck.
