If you’ve wondered about the Thunderbolt 3 vs. the USB 4 external SSD on your M1 Mac, and whether there’s a difference, then this review video may answer some questions to help you make that buying decision. I recently did a video on editing on the fastest external SSD for on the M1 Mac, and this is a follow up to that video where I compare the Thunderbolt 3 NVMe enclosure to the USB 4 NVMe enclosure. There are some synthetic benchmarks, but I also provide you with some additional testing where I export a multi-camera 4K timeline on each of these drives. In addition, all cables are certified Thunderbolt cables, and I've even tried these enclosures with an active Thunderbolt cable. Be sure to note my “alert” on the USB 4 enclosure and my buying experience. I also meant to share the temps on these drives during export: 4K Export: TB3 with the SN750: 48.5C/119.3F on the SSD, and 31.2C/88.1F with the case/top on. 4K Export: USB4 with the SN750: 52.1C/125.7F on the SSD, and 35.6C/96F with the case/top on. 4K Export: USB4 with Silicon Power: 61.5C/142.7F on the SSD, and 32.3C/89.9 with the case/top on. This is the fastest external SSD for video editing right now for the M1 Mac. This of course also applies to any Intel based Mac or PC. In this review of the M1 Mac and the Silicon Power PCIe Gen 4 SSD NVMe 1.3 in the Thunderbolt 3 enclosure from Fledging, I go back to editing a Full Sony A7siii 4K Timeline on this external drive and compare that with the internal drive as well as the Sandisk Extreme SSD. For those of you that have invested in external SSDs like the ones from Samsung or Sandisk, I’m not saying you need to go out and immediately pick up one of these DIY SSD NVMe solutions. I’ve run my own benchmarks, which do include synthetic benchmarks, but also my own workflow in how this SSD performs for file transfers and video editing. The Samsung 980 Pro and WD Black SN850 are both great external SSD options, but they do perform differently on these Apple Silicon machines. This is part 2 of my Upgrading M1 MacMini Storage which shows the reinstallation process of macOS to an external USB Enclosure and migration of your existing internal Storage, I also briefly talk about using Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your internal disk to an external USB connected one as well as deleting the internal drive. Using Blackmagicdesign Disk Speed Test the M1 internal storage came in 🤍 2061 MB/s Write and 2121 MB/s Read and the ORICO with a Samsung Eco 970 Plus 2 TB came in 🤍 1000 MB/s Write and 2826 MB/s Read, Writes are a bit slower but still incredibly fast for day to day use. Also if you do not want to do a freeh install you can clone your existing drive to your external with a tool like carbon copy cloner. Apple does not want you to use cheap USB-C type external SSDs on your Macbook. Apple will limit speed of the USB-C SSD drives. So you will need to get one with the Thunderbolt support.
