ESPHome provides firmware for an ESP8266- or ESP32-based remote device like a sensor or a switch (and much more). Home Assistant is a home automation hub that controls and interconnects remote devices like sensors and switches.(and much more). In a previous video (🤍 I showed how I discovered the open source home automation projects #ESPHome and Home Assistant and my first steps into this world. I have learned a lot since and now I am ready to present my automated doorbell project that I already mentioned in that video. The goal is to detect doorbell rings in Home Assistant so that they can be relayed to places where the doorbell cannot be heard. Fabulous open source projects like ESPurna, ESPhome and Home Assistant make home automation much easier. Instead of spending many hours on developing communication protocols and other low-level stuff, you can concentrate on defining automation rules for your connected devices. What makes these projects even better is their support for many commercially available products. Seamlessly integrate your own ESP-based devices with e.g. Ikea Trådfri, Philips Hue and Zigbee-based products. In this video we show how to install Home Assistant (a.k.a. hass.io) on a Raspberry Pi and how to transform a custom ESP8266 device into an #ESPHome device that connects to Home Assistant. We then show how to define some automation rules to control the behaviour of our ESP device. P.S. Before you post a comment, we are aware of the Generic Thermostat built into Home Assistant or the Bang Bang Controller of ESPHome. After taking a look at the Aqara FP1 Sensor a few weeks back, noticing it's lack of availability and price tag, I decided tried to build my own presence detection sensor with a much tighter budget. Both of these are mmWave sensors used for Human Presence Detection in rooms where there is no motion and can detect the smallest amount of movement. In this video, I show you what I used, how I installed it and how to integrate it with ESPHome and Home Assistant in your Smart Home. Finally we look at how well it compares to the Aqara FP1? Building My Perfect Smart Home Presence Detection Sensor!

A few weeks ago, I took you through a custom built room presence sensor which used mmWave to accurately detect the presence of a person in a room - even when there was no movement. The DIY sensor we built is amazing for controlling things like smart lights in rooms when you don't tend to move around much, like your living room or bedroom. So after that video, I became focussed on how to improve this sensor and what other sensors I could add in here to make MY ideal room presence sensor, everything from light levels, temperature, humidity and of course, multiple levels of occupancy and presence. Not only for kitchen cabinet lighting... use anywhere motion triggered lighting is needed: Bathroom, Bedroom, Stairs, etc. I'll walk you through how to make this motion sensing LED strip light switch step by step. 💥 BONUS: Unlike a PIR Motion sensor to switch your lighting, the Microwave binary sensor can sense through walls - making it easy to hide. Use it elsewhere in Home Assistant for presence detection and/or Alarm System. All functions / features have been programmed on ESPHome flashed D1 mini. No need for complex Home Assistant or Node-Red Scripts, Automations, etc. Just add a Light to your Home Assistant Dashboard / Lovelace and put the Day/Night Mode 'activator' switch in your scheduler and you're done!. 💖 I hope you like this Home Assistant setup guide for your smart home 💖 🛠 ESPHome Code: 🤍 💖 Thank you to OLAFUS for supporting this tutorial by suppling the LED Strip Light.
