Materials: - Single strand cotton cord 4mm - Cut 1 strand 160 cm long - Cut 5 strands each 100 cm long - Cut 6 strands each 80 cm long - Cut 6 strands each 60 cm long - You might need more cord. The terms string, rope and cord are used a lot in macrame and can mean one thing to one person and something different to the next. In this tutorial I will go over these terms and provide you with examples of the 3 most common types of cord that are used in macrame. Cord: An overarching term that I use to refer to either string or rope. String: Refers to single strand twisted string which is created by twisting individual strands of fibre together. For this tutorial I am using cotton string. It comes in different sizes (3mm, 5mm and 9mm are seen here). A great feature of cotton string is that it can be brushed out to create tassels, feathers, etc. Natural cotton string is a off white/cream colour but cotton string can also be purchased in a variety of different colours. Here is a comparison between natural and white string. Rope: Is created by twisting individual strands of fibre together to make groups. Those groups are then twisted or braided together to create rope. Groups of 2 creates 2 Ply rope, and groups of 3 creates 3 Ply rope (both are used frequently in macrame). Groups can also be braided together to create braided rope. This is 2 ply rope (3mm in size). Here is the difference between string and rope. Rope can also be brushed out but the ends end up a bit wavy. Metallic colours can also be added to rope and string. This is 3 ply rope (5mm in size). This is braided rope (5mm in size). I would not recommend brushing out braided rope as the ends become frizzy. Thanks so much for watching!

In this video I go through two methods for calculating how much cord you need for your new macrame project. Here is a brief description of both: 1. Simple/geometric patterns - in order to use this one I need to know how much cord do I need per 1 knot in the pattern. It is best if you can test this with the same type and size of rope (e.g. single twist 5mm) as we all tie knots with different strength - some will be tighter and some looser with varying cord length. The formula is then the following: (A+(B*number of knots)+C)*2 A = How much cord do you need to attach it to your dowel rod B = How much cord do you need per 1 knot C = How long do you want your fringe If you can't test how much cord you need per 1 knot here is a guide (keep in mind these are my knots, so yours might be a bit tighter/looser): 1 SQUARE KNOT Single twist cord and 3ply cord 1,5mm - 3 cm 3mm - 5 cm 5mm - 6 cm Braided cord - because of the stretchiness of the cord here is especially where your knots can be quite different 5mm - 6 cm 1 BERRY KNOT Single twist cord and 3ply cord 1,5mm - 12 cm 3mm - 18 cm 5mm - 24 cm Braided cord - because of the stretchiness of the cord here is especially where your knots can be quite different 5mm - 18 cm 10 CM OF THE SPIRAL KNOT (=how much cord you need to create 10 cm of the spiral knot) Single twist cord and 3ply cord 1,5mm - 52 cm 3mm - 46 cm 5mm - 40 cm Braided cord - because of the stretchiness of the cord here is especially where your knots can be quite different 5mm - 24 cm 2.Complicated pattern - when you can't calculate how many knots are in your pattern. A quick and easy tip on how to measure cord/rope for macrame plant hangers, wall hangings or any other project using body length measures. 🤍 Using body measures is a great way to measure a lot of rope quickly. Be creative and work with a measure that is easy for you to keep the maths simple. I am lucky that the measure I use from my fingers to my opposite shoulder, arm fully extended measures exactly 1m (39.3 inches). You could try some of these body length measures: * Arm extended, fingers to first shoulder * Arm extended, fingers to opposite shoulder * Arm extended, fingers to the centre of your collar bone * Arm extended, fingers to your nose (my mum always turned her head away - maybe it will add a few extra centimetres to make a nice round number for you) * Both arms fully extended, I've not tried this myself as my limbs are quite long and I think this would measure too much for me. But give it a try if the others are not working out for you. The best thing is that once you measure these up with a measuring tape once - the length is unlikely to change at all if you are using the same technique every time. It took me a while to trust it with repeat measuring and my workshop and school class students have tested me on it before. It works for me every time. I'd love to know what you think if you give it a try.
